Since the raw materials for cement come from the ground, cement tends to be a rural industry. Cement manufacturing plants require large scale sites that are way too big for urban areas, so most cement manufacturing happens out in the countryside.
Cement is made by crushing & heating limestone or chalk with small amounts of clay and shale in a rotating kiln (a cement oven if you will), at temperatures of 1450°.
Kilning chemically combines the stones into a hard substance called clinker, the process itself alters the composition from calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to calcium oxide (CaO, also known as quicklime) which then reacts with silica (SiO2) to form calcium silicate (Ca2SiO4). This is then cooled and sent to a cement mill to be ground into a powder with about five per cent gypsum added, to control the setting time of the finished cement.
The finished cement is then stored in silos awaiting despatch to either bag-packing facilities or onto bulk rail or road tankers.
Cement is a binding substance that hardens when set and sticks materials together like glue. In Roman times, the terms 'Opus Caementicium' came about when describing masonry made from crushed rock and burnt lime, that resembled today's concrete. This led to the word cement being coined for what we use today.
Cement is one of the most prevalent products used in the construction of all types of buildings & structures today. There are two principal types of cement:
The biggest uses of cement in construction are as a mortar for brickwork and in concrete.
Cement is an essential ingredient in concrete which, according to the Cement Industry Association, is the world's second most consumed substance after water! Portland cement is a local product to the UK and was even invented here. No school, house, road, hospital or bridge could be built without it, so it's pretty important stuff.
The cement industry is responsible for around £1BN in the UK economy each year and there are 12 manufacturing plants producing around 10MN tonnes of it annually, making up about a 90% share of all cement sold in the UK.
Rugby Cement is a range of cement products that's ideal for use in mortar, concrete, render and screed. Rugby Cement is a highly popular product thanks to its consistent quality and great value for money. Rugby Cement comes in standard and premium packs, the latter being a finer, lighter product available in paper as well as weatherproof plastic bags.
